Singapore born designer Jonathan Seow proved his worth on the runway tonight. Showcasing his latest Autumn/Winter collection at the Red Dot Museum, he took the breath of many Singaporeans away.
What greeted me at the main entrance was more than just delight, it was ASAHI beer! I could not believe my luck. Hahaha. A nice cold beer before the fashion parade would only make the evening all so divine.
There was nothing fanciful about the runway. It was just plain concrete flooring with no sprucing up at all. The backdrop was a far cry from anything you can find at the Singapore Fashion Festival. A few panels in pristine white with a few light bulbs thrown in, was more than enough for this Singaporean designer. There was absolutely nothing fanciful about this fashion show, not even the theme for the evening-Beauty.Beuys. However, the simplicity of this show has drawn the attention of many celebrities and media attention. Stylist David Gan was also present at the show. Jonathan Seow is after all one of the most sought after designer in the world.
One by one the models started their strutting. Insider info has it that the models were around 13 years old. MY GOD! The models were barely of legal age to work, but they looked fantastic in the clothes. Flawless makeup and fantastic hairdos all aptly put in place for the each and every single work of art. Jonathan’s clothes I would say is Art. It was more than just fashion. Every single detail on his clothes was looked after. I really cannot imagine all the clothes were designed by a Singaporean Designer. It looked too good and every bit of it looked more westernised than anything. All the models used were ang mohs as well. Not professional models mind you. Jonathan picked talents over supermodels to showcase his work. He wanted his clothes to look wearable and definitely not meant only for pretty people. The whole show had a certain standard that could not be matched by other fashion shows in Singapore; it had the X-factor.
The clothes were predominately black and white. Lots of buckles and belts were used to enhance this collection. However, the overall effect did not turn out tacky. Shoes on guys were sponsored by converse, and I could see that they were all white canvas shoes. It provided a look that was casual but with an edge.
The only problem with the show was the pace, too fast. Before we knew it, the show was over. It was only slightly more than 15 mins. Maybe it was the runway, maybe the models were not experience enough. We do not know. But they definitely need to slow it down.
Conclusion: A wonderful collection.
